The Schools We Need
Nov 9, 2008
I was watching a silly video on Viddler that was mildly related to learning and I stumbled upon The Schools We Need – a presentation Chris Lehmann from the Science Leadership Academy gave at Ignite Philly 2 in September. Ignite Philly gives you 20 slides and 5 minutes to talk about something. Chris chose to talk about our responsibility to technology in our school systems. It’s a great 5 minutes and notable for the content as well as the format.

This is why there are so many kids, students, out of touch with their classes, even families and entire communities – these kids themselves are ignored. Instead, teachers impose thoughts and formulas on them to regurgitate. The kid him or herself does not matter – what matters is that the kid fit a certain model, be quiet, studious, and fit in.
MIT has it right, because with the mindset schools lock kids´ minds in, not much can develop and come out. Change is absolutely what we need for growth, because not all kids learn the same, feel the same, think the same things. Different kids need different ways of learning.
Now, while this is what we need, it doesn´t mean it´s what we will get – at least not in the near future. The technological changes proposed, especially, will not come easily or cheaply. But clearing our heads and knowing what we want is a great start.
